Service Projects

The service projects listed below are where the money we collect go to. We help our environment and the people who live in it.

  • Project Eliminate

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

  • UNICEF

UNICEF is one of the most recognizable children's organization across the world. Not only do they commit and work with Key Club International (KCI), but also with many other non-governmental organizations.

Every day, an estimated 25,000 children die from preventable causes – because they lack simple things like access to clean drinking water, basic childhood medical attention, sufficient nutrition, or immunizations that can protect them against deadly diseases.

UNICEF’s goal is simple – we will do whatever it takes to reduce the number of preventable childhood deaths to zero. Only UNICEF has the global experience, resources and reach to give children the best hope for survival.

And that’s why we need you and your students to help. Thanks again for your dedication to children and for joining me and thousands of educators around the United States to empower children to make a difference in the lives of their peers by participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!

  • Pediatric Trauma Program

The Pediatric Trauma Program was established by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation in 1994 after recognizing the serious need for education and training in pediatric trauma and injury prevention. The purpose of this program

is to develop local service projects to educate people of children’s safety to decrease the number of children who are severely injured or killed due to traumatic unintentional injuries. The Kiwanis Foundation is furthering the program’s mission by establishing partnerships with hospitals in the areas of Oakland, San Diego, Loma Linda, Madera, Honolulu, and Reno.

The Pediatric Trauma Program funds the training of pediatric doctors, nurses and first responders, the purchase of specialized pediatric medical equipment, and the development of community outreach. The Pediatric Trauma Program is heavily supported through the generous donations towards the Pediatric Trauma Program from clubs and members of the Kiwanis Family, and the donations go towards grants to partnered hospitals, grants to Kiwanis and
Service Leadership Program clubs, and PTP safety items. The Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation is currently seeking to strengthen the program and hoping to expand to other areas, partner with more hospitals, and greatly reduce the
devastating harm of severe unintentional injuries.

  • March for Dimes

Every day 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. arrives too soon. Premature birth can happen to any pregnant woman, and no one knows why. It is a serious, common and costly problem. Key Club members are helping by raising thousands of dollars annually for the March of Dimes Youth Program to help prevent prematurity.

The March of Dimes currently focuses on two major goals in their Prematurity Campaign:

• Raising awareness of prematurity

• Reducing the rate of premature births

Each year, Key Clubbers help by raising funds for March of Dimes programs to help prevent prematurity. In 2009-10, Key Club raised $100,000 for March of Dimes.

Key Club International began working with the March of Dimes in the 1960s by holding dances, car washes and bakes sales to raise funds for medical research into birth defects. Key Clubbers around the world remember collecting dimes in hopes that someday children would be born free of birth defects. Today, Key Club members still collect change to support the March of Dimes.

March for Babies is the March of Dimes largest fundraiser and typically takes place in late April. Visit www.marchforbabies.org to sign up online and find the date and location in your area. On the site, you can register as a new or returning walker. Make sure you register as a Key Club team! If you have any questions, contact your local March of Dimes chapter.
